EXCERPT FROM MANCHESTER SCHOOL READINESS COUNCIL BROCHURE
Ready
It's more important than ever that children enter school ready to learn. Being ready to learn means more than just knowing letters and numbers—it also means children are healthy, well nourished, and are socially and emotionally prepared to begin school activities.
Studies show that young children who have high quality preschool learning experiences—whether at home, in early care facilities, or in other preschool settings—have greater success in school. Early childhood education helps children gain in:
- language and math skills
- problem-solving ability
- social skills and relationships with others
- literacy skills
- self-control
- motivation for learning
Children who take part in educational activities before entering school have a better chance for success in school and in later life.
Or Not...
Studies show that kids who enter kindergarten without readiness skills can lag behind and have a hard time catching up. Sometimes they don't complete school at all, and find it difficult to earn a living wage in the workplace. Kids who get off to a poor educational start have a greater chance of experiencing:
- remedial or special education placements
- poor attendance in school, dropping out or "staying back"
- aggressive or anti-social behavior
- mental health or substance abuse issues
- poverty, delinquency or involvement with the criminal justice system
The whole community feels the impact when its children are not prepared to learn in school. Read on to see what you can do to help...
